While there is fair ammount of anxiety settling-in in the treasury benches at the start of Monsoon Session 2021 of the Parliament, the opposition parties grouped together to decide to invoke various parliamentary ‘devices’ available to check-mate the government.

To begin with, on Sunday a day before the start of session, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a large meeting of floor leaders from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha..

Almost 33 leaders of various political parties took part in this preparatory taking notes from the government’s agenda for the monsoon session which begins tomorrow i.e. on Monday, 19th July 2021.

Later in the day, the only Leader of the Opposition from either of the two Houses of Parliament, Mallikarjun Kharge – the LoP Rajya Sabha –  held a separate meeting to decide to keep alive the pressure on the government,  demanding that important Bills need a proper scrutiny from designated  Standing Committees.

This session is being held keeping all COVID19 protocols factored-in and includes MPs being asked to sit with some distance between them.

They are being asked to spread-out and sit all over the available space within both the House chambers,  with the exception being that of the Press Galleries in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

This session is scheduled to conclude on 13th of August 2021.

Leaders who took part in the PM’s meeting, representing 33 political parties, included the Congress, TMC, DMK, YSRCP, Shiv Sena, JDU, BJD, SP, TRS, AIDMK, BSP, NCP, TDP, Akali Dal, RJD, AAP, CPI, CPI (M), IUML, AJSU, RLP, RSP, MDMK, Tamil Maanila Congress, Kerala Congress, JMM, MNF, RPI, and the NPF.
