Political uncertainty continues in Sri Lanka even as reports emanating from Colombo suggests that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is to step down on Monday the 9th of May, 2022 even as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is reported to have invited Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to form the government.

According to reports, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday the 7th of May requested the Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa, of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party, to become the next Prime Minister.

It was reported in the Sri Lankan media that the President telephoned Sajith on Saturday morning and requested him to become the Prime Minister in the face of the current crisis in the country.

The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith has reportedly agreed to accept the Prime Minister’s post under certain conditions.

He had reached this agreement during a meeting with the members of the SJB on Saturday.

It is said that the main conditions of Sajith are the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa by Monday and the transfer of some of the presidential powers of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to Parliament.
