The capital of Nepal was plunged into chaos as GenZ protesters torched government buildings while the country’s PM fled and President whose palatial building was destroyed resigned.
The Army which had fired upon the protesters killing 19 a day earlier played restrain on Tuesday the 9th of September 2025.
The ban on social media now has been fully lifted.
Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oliand President Ramchandra Paudel announced their resignations.
Over 500 people have been reported to beinjured in clashes with security forces at various places in Nepal.
Nepalese authorities have imposed curfew across the Valley and deployed heavy security to manage the demonstrations, but the protests have continued to intensify.
Meanwhile, senior Nepalese government officials have issued a public appeal calling for restraint amid the widespread demonstrations.
“With the resignation of the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli now accepted, we sincerely urge all citizens to remain calm and avoid further damage to life and property,” the appeal stated.
“We also call on all concerned parties to seek a swift and peaceful resolution through political dialogue.”
The appeal was signed by key officials including: Eknarayan Aryal, Chief Secretary; Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief of Army Staff; Gokarnamani Duwadi, Home Secretary; Raju Aryal, Inspector General Armed Police Force; and Chandra Kuber Khapung, Inspector General, Nepal Police.
The officials emphasized that cooperation from citizens and restraint by all parties are critical to stabilizing the situation and preventing further casualties or property damage.
Oli was serving his fourth term as prime minister since July 2024 with the backing of the Nepali Congress.
His resignation marks the end of a political career that saw him hold office in 2015–16, 2018–21, briefly in 2021, and again from July 2024 until his exit on Tuesday.
Known for his assertive style and nationalist policies, Oli had come to power on promises of stability and prosperity but left amid mounting unrest and accusations of authoritarianism.
He was supposed to visit India later this month.
