Combined opposition parties has named Margaret Alva as their candidate against ruling party BJP’s Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The election for the next vice president of India will take place on August the 6th 2022.

Unlike for the president’s election where all the MLAs of state assemblies with the MPs of both the Houses vote, the vice president of India is only elected by the members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The announcement naming Margaret Alva came a day after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) said West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar will be its candidate for the Vice Presidential election.
The opposition leaders finalised her name after a meeting held at the residence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar which was attended by all major opposition parties including the Congress, TMC, CPIM, RJD, SP, and others.
She has earlier served as the governor of Rajasthan.

Jagdeep Dhankhar is currently the Governor of West Bengal.
