India took the opportunity during its ministerial meeting with US leadership in Delhi to flag concerns about pro-Khalistani elements operating from Canada.

On Friday the 10th of November 2023 during its 2+2 India-US meeting being held in New Delhi, the External Affairs minister Dr Jaishankar along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

While briefing media persons Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said   – “We have made our concerns very very clear.”

“We have core security concerns and I am sure you are all aware of recent video that has surfaced from one such individual,” Vinay Kwatra said while adding the US delegation well understood India’s concerns.

The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in September last over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June in the Canadian town of Surrey.

Days after Trudeau’s allegations, India temporarily suspended issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity.

Canada has already withdrawn 41 diplomats and their family members from India.

The Ministry of External Affairs has resumed some of the visa services while reviewing the dicey situation.
