The much delayed Women’s Reservation Bill has been finally passed by the Parliament clearing way for 33 percent of seats for women in Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assemblies in the country.

Rajya Sabha sat till late in the night on Thursday the 21st of September 2023 to pass the historic bill without anyone opposing it.

The vote count was 214 as ‘Yes’ while no one voted against it.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was incidentally present in Rajya Sabha when the voting was taking place said – “This bill will lead to a new confidence in the people of the country. It also shows the positive thinking of all the political parties which will give new energy to women’s empowerment.”

Technically this bill is known as  – the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023

It may be recalled that a day earlier on Wednesday the Lok Sabha had cleared  the decks for the landmark legislation.

The women reservation in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies come into effect from 2029 onwards after the new census is conducted and after the 2026 delimitation exercise is completed across the nation.
