To enhance passenger safety, Indian Railways have decided to install close circuit TVs (CCTVs) in a big in all passenger coaches across its entire network.

According to officials of the Ministry of Railways (MoR), the decision is based on a positive outcome of an experiment wherein CCTV cameras were placed in passenger coaches monitoring safety and security.

Now, the officials added that railways have decided to install CCTV cameras in all coaches and will significantly improve passenger safety.

Official release issued on Sunday the 13th of July 2025 stated that as  – miscreants and organised gangs take advantage of gullible passengers, with  cameras, such incidents will significantly reduce.

To preserve privacy of passengers, CCTV cameras will be installed in the common movement area near the doors.

In a meeting held on Saturday the 12th of July 2025 both Ashwini Vaishnaw and Ravneet Singh Bittu, the cabinet minister for railways and his MOS (minister of stat) reviewed the progress of that experiment of installation of CCTV cameras and decided to go ahead for the entire network across the country.

Now all the 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locos will get cameras.

Each passenger coach will be covered with 4 dome type CCTV cameras – 2 in each entrance way and each locomotive will have 6 CCTV cameras.

This will include 1 camera each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive.

Each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with 1 dome CCTV camera and 2 desk mounted microphones.

The officials added that these cameras will be able to record high quality footage even for trains running at 100 kmph plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions.
