In wake of widespread unrest in Nepal after local government had banned social media apps, about 19 people were killed and more than 300 were injured with bullet injuries on Monday the 8th of September 2025.
The most of casualties took place in Kathmandu even as authorities were forced to withdraw orders to ban social media apps.
Army was deployed on the streets of Kathmandu capital after angry protesters broke curfew restrictions and entered restricted zones near Parliament building.
Late in the evening many media outlets reported that Nepalese Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak submitted his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during the emergency cabinet meeting held earlier at the official residence.
Police responded with water cannons, teargas, and rubber bullets after demonstrators threw tree branches and water bottles and shouted anti-government slogans.
Angey protesters had managed to enter the Parliament area that escalated the situation – a despatch by The Kathmandu Post stated.
In response to the unrest, the Kathmandu District Administration Office extended the curfew– initially imposed in the capital’s Baneshwar area. The new restrictions now include several high-security zones, such as the President’s residence (Shital Niwas), the Vice-President’s residence in Lainchaur, Maharajgunj, all sides of Singha Durbar, the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, and adjacent areas.
