The Governor of Maharashtra C P Radhakrishnan is all set to become the next Vice President of India.

His candidature was announced soon after the ruling BJP’s Parliamentary  Board meeting held on Sunday the 17th of August 2025 by J P Nadda, the president of the BJP.

On Tuesday the 19th of August, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address NDA MPs during the weekly meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party.

The  electoral college for the Vice President’s elections consist of MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The post of Vice President of India cum the Chairman of Rajya Sabha fell vacant after abrupt resignation Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The ruling BJP-NDA enjoys a comfortable majority for the election of Vice President of India.

With the combined strength of both houses standing at 786, the majority mark is 394. The ruling alliance strength in the two houses is 422 — 293 members in the Lok Sabha and 129 in the Rajya Sabha.

The opposition is yet to announce their choice of candidate with election date scheduled for September 9th.

“Mr Radhakrishnan has a 40-year experience in politics and wore many hats,” said BJP chief JP Nadda, making the announcement this evening after a meeting with NDA parliamentary party meeting.

In a social media post on X, the Prime Minister said Mr Radhakrishnan has done extensive work at the grassroots level in Tamil Nadu and he was glad that the NDA family has decided to nominate him as the Vice Presidential candidate of the alliance.

“In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect,” Modi said while adding that

“During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised.”
